Lesson Plan

Fred Seibel, the Times-Dispatch, and Massive Resistance

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet
This Fred Seibel, the Times-Dispatch, and Massive Resistance lesson plan also includes:
  • Cartoon Analysis Worksheet
  • Cartoon #1 "Now What"
  • Cartoon #2 "Riding Out the Storm"
  • Join to access all included materials

A lesson plan challenges scholars to analyze editorial cartoons created by Fred Seibel, illustrator for the Times-Dispatch, during the Massive Resistance. A class discussion looking at today's editorial pages and Jim Crow Laws leads the way to guided practice. Independently, participants analyze a cartoon, focusing on the general meaning, and share their opinion. A homework assignment follows a closing discussion.
