Close Observation: Coins

Integrate math, science, and speaking/listening with a collaborative hands-on activity. Each group works with a single penny, examining it with the naked eye and recording observations. Repeat using magnifying glasses. Then repeat with a nickel, dime, or quarter. Young researchers complete a Venn diagram comparing two denominations. Be sure to provide coins that meet your continuity/variety preferences. Requires some chart/diagram design; no worksheets are attached.

Lynne S.
I'm a private tutor, and Lesson Planet helps me gather materials quickly on specific topics in different grade levels that I can adapt for one-on-one tutoring. Some of my students are ADHD, and I really appreciate it when I find lessons on the same concept taught in different ways. If one way doesn't quite work, very often I find another that works much better.
