Concepts

poetry, figurative language, metaphors, poetry slams, analogies, reading poetry, poetic devices

Instructional Ideas

  • Set up the classroom like an open-mike cafe and have poets perform their work for the class
  • Add the discussion questions to the top of handout with the poem and give pupils time to respond before viewing the video
  • After showing the video have viewers respond to the second set of questions before the whole-class discussion

Classroom Considerations

Imagine performing a poem while on a rollercoaster! Viewers have an opportunity to ride along as Jasmine Gardosi performs her poem "Rollercoaster" written in response to the pandemic. Class members first read Gardosi's poem and respond to several questions. They then watch the video of the poet performing her poem before ending the lesson with a whole-class discussion.
