Math Antics Fractions Video Lessons

Collector: Ann V.

A series of short videos demonstrate for learners how to work with fractions. The first video in the series defines fractions as being a representation of parts of a whole. As the series continues, viewers learn ways to write division problems and practice converting between fractions and division notation. Using a number line, another video shows where the location depends on fraction type, compares the types, and uses that information to estimate values of other fractions. Viewers also learn the place values for decimals and how to write them, change base-10 fractions to decimals and vice-versa, and convert any fraction to a decimal. Subsequent videos teach the procedure to multiply fractions, simplify fractions, add fractions with common denominators, and find a common denominator. By listing the multiples of the denominators, learners easily identify the least common multiple by finding the first common multiple. Using the interpretation of fractions as division problems, they learn the relationship of dividing by a fraction and multiplying by its reciprocal. Using long division, another video shows viewers how to convert a fraction into a decimal and use their knowledge of fractions to set up a division problem. Finally, pupils learn the procedures to perform conversions between mixed numbers and proper fractions, subtract mixed numbers, and add mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators.
