Within three nutrition-themed, inquiry-based learning opportunities, pupils take notice of their eating habits; delve deep into the five food groups, gain experience in planning meals, participate in a taste test, and explore ads from the food industry. All of these support learners in the process of making smart food choices, and allow them to reflect upon their experiences through a variety of hands-on activities.

Instructional Ideas

  • Make copies of the "Serving Up My Plate" page for pupils to have on hand for reference purposes
  • Take musical brain breaks with the resource's songs when you notice the class needs a pause from current instruction
  • Pose applicable discussion questions on a classroom blog to gain participation from all scholars

 

Classroom Considerations

  • Schedule time in the computer lab, or on mobile learning devices, on days technology is required 
  • Take classroom allergies into consideration prior to bringing in food so not to cause a reaction
  • Coordinate with cafeteria personnel to plan days the class goes to the school kitchen or speaks with the chef
